I like the center stand idea, well executed!

Yup, great idea. If you’ve a center stand kicking around. The KZ LTDS didn’t have one. Try and find one. And the cost of the aftermarket stands plus bolts gets really expensive.

Hey, that Z1 electrical video was great! If I saw the same video you did, it looks like an original Kawasaki training video.
I had a nice ride to Hope today. My buddy has a beautiful 1992 Suzuki Katana 1100 with Collector plates. Nice (powerful) Bike!

Nice Katana!
Today I tried to figure out why I have full voltage on both sides of my coils. It's a mystery to me.

Electricity is voodoo magic.
I worked for a contractor who did Hydro line work/poles. Saw some weird scary stuff a few times.

Your coil problem sounds brutal!
You have probably already tried this but its worth a mention.
Dynatek has a good testing procedure. "Dyna-s ignition system and coil testing" It is the top download in the link below.
http://www.dynaonline.com/support/downloads.aspx?p_v=DYNA%20S
I used it to find my bad coil.

Thanks for the link. I have the instructions. The coils are fine. I've had them off and tested them.
Part of the test procedure is to set the magnet on the advance mechanism to straight up. That way it's not activating either pickup. Voltage on the hot side should be 12 volts or close to it. Voltage on the black/green wires should be about 1 volt but in my case I have full voltage. Either the Dyna setup is bad or I have a short into the coil wires somewhere. I'm assuming at this point that the Dyna setup is fine but I have a short into the coil wires from somewhere.

So, On my 73 Z1 I installed my new coils and spark plug wires and the #1 and #4 plugs still aren't firing.
This is after going through the complete trouble shooting guide by Dynatek and finding a faulty coil for the #1 and #4 spark plugs.
The Dyna ignition system tests fine on both sides. The timing is perfect. I'm getting proper voltage to the coils etc.
At this point I might re-install the old points.
It's either that or try another $200.00 experiment by replacing the dyna ignition system.
Dang!! Back to square one

Just a thought, check out how the reg/rec is working
also leaving ignition on too long might have damaged a coil

Finally got mine working. The little clip Dyna provides to hook the pickup wires into the red/yellow hot side was not making contact. I found another source and was able to set things up properly.
Z1eh, if you're Dyna ignition system is working fine then why change it? Sounds like the problem is your 1/4 coil. I would pull it and check impedance.

Congrats Hardrockminor!
Lots of good advice here. I did just receive my new rectifier/regulator. I'll be installing that next
Now that I have a brand new set of coils that I just received yesterday, I installed them and the coil in the #1 #4 position still didn't work. The #2 #3 coil works fine.
So, I swapped them and the coil in the #1 #4 position didn't work even though it worked in the #2 #3position.
That would indicate that it has something to do with the Dyna ignition system.
I did follow the Dynatek testing procedure for the ignition system and everything checks out fine but obviously something isn't right.
It has to be something with either the #1 #4 sending unit or the Dyna wiring harness even though they both test fine.
I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually. I'd much rather be riding it! :-)

My experience is with cars, so bear with me on this. What I know so far. Correct voltage at the coil, and equal. New coils, new reg/rec, swapping coils produced same result, so leads me to believe the pickup or the brain is not telling the coil to fire. If there are separate connections in the harness for the non firing pair I would recheck those. Guess there’s a reason they have the trouble shooting PDF, when really it should be plug and play, like when I ditched the points in my car.

Remembered to bring my meter home to check the charging system on the LeMans.
It appears the alternator rotor and rectifier have given up.
Time to give MG cycle some money.
