Title: Can Am 370 mx5
Post by: rz5mark on July 29, 2022, 08:40:05 PM
Picked this up to restore. Looks like it had been looped out and badly bent the rear frame. The repair was pretty bush. I have a parts bike so I am grafting the good rear frame over. All in now.

Some really ugly welding going on there.  Reminds me of Kawasaki in the early days.

Years ago, when I lived in Smithers I knew a guy in Granisle who had cornered the market on Can Am frames.  He had about a dozen of them strewn across his yard.  He died a couple of years ago but his son might still have the frames.

i've always had a strong admiration of the Quebec based Austrian Rotax powered Can-Ams. My brother and I would load up our dirt bikes almost every weekend through the 1980's in the back of my truck, and go play in the "Army Playground" up Sylvester Road up Cultus Lake area. My '81 Can-Am 250 MX6 was a real cracker of a bush bike. Fast. Only when my brother got his Yamaha YZ490 did i fail to win any races. Later we decided to go 4 stroke because of 2 stroke's fussiness to altitude change riding the mountains up there. My Can-Am Sonic 500 proved to be a great machine allround. I wish there was a street legal one on this planet cause I'd have it.

I had 3 490's over the years. Hard to jet for dirt, fat, get hot, ping....I ice raced the ones I had, easy to jet for ice as you always pinned and it's cold out. Broke the frame on one where the down tube splits to the two seat rails. Bike felt really weird the last lap. Lots of load on the frame when you pitch sideways pinned with tons of traction.

Slowly getting the 370 back together. Fresh rings for the motor.

No need for HIGH-VIZ clothing when riding that Buzz Bomb.
