I was listening to Taj Mahal yesterday.  I have his version of Sugar Pie Honey Bunch on my phone, a song made popular by the Four Tops.  What attracts me to this version is its reggae beat that refreshes a song I used to hear so much in my yout.  But when I went to Youtube I found his version of Statesboro Blues, with one of my favourite guitarists, Ry Cooder.  I thought it was worth a listen so today I have two tunes for your pleasure.

Today is the 50th anniversary of Joni Mitchell's album titled "Blue".  People call it one of the best albums ever and technically it may well be.  I love Joni's voice but was never enamoured by her look, which I reminds me of someone with an eating disorder.  Graham Nash was in love with her but she wanted to focus on career so we never got to hear their marvellous voices harmonize.  Joni went to the same high school that I went to, although she was there several years before me.

As a tribute to Blue here is one of her best songs in my opinion.

Well, we are agreed on these three as they are all amazing to me. Exceptional musicians and performers.

Yesterday was my parents' wedding anniversary.  They were married in 1946 and remained married until my mother died in January 2012.  I played this song a few times during the day.  She loved this song and ordered it up at her funeral as the ceremony ended and we were walking her ashes out the door.  The band was popular back in the '70's.  I first heard them while I was up in Greenland.  All the Danes thought they were the greatest but I wasn't impressed by a bunch of European singers.  But what did I know?  I was the one who in 1968 said that the newly introduced McDonalds would be a failure in Saskatoon because they didn't serve you at your car like A&W.

This guy has been singing forever.  He is truly an entertainer for the people.  I can't think of anyone who shows his love of entertaining any more than him.  Here he is singing Volcano.

I've heard a lot of versions of this song but the King does it best I think.

I'm reaching the point where I don't know if I've posted a particular song already.  In this case it's Helter Skelter, by the Beatles.  It gained notoriety because of Charles Manson and his followers who used it as their mantra.  But actually, it was a simple song about a carnival ride called Helter Skelter that Paul had seen.  What I like about it is the incredible energy the song portrays, the rawness of it and the throbbing pounding druming and bass guitar.  And then George, using his marvellous talent to know when to play and when not to play.  All in all a great song, one of the first high energy rock songs of my generation.  Wait for Ringo's complaint at the very end.

I've never truly gotten into the Allman Brothers Band but this song has always rung my bell.

Check out the live acoustic version of "Melissa" by the Allman brothers band. Dickie Betts making an acoustic guitar almost speak. One of my favorites. It's got about 10 million views.

Three Dog Night was a popular band in the '70's.  I've got a half dozen of their songs on my iphone and I could probably double that number easily with songs that everybody knows.  This is one of them.

When I first heard this lady I thought it was Dolly Parton.  Very similar sounding voice.  But no...It was Alison Krauss, with marvellous clear tone and terrific lyrics.  This is one of her finest songs I think.  Listen carefully to the words.
