Got my bored cylinders and head back last evening.  Spent the day today prepping and painting the cases, cylinders, and head.  I'll let them cure a day or two before I grind the fins.  The 73 Z1's were the only year that the engine was painted.  The cylinder and head fins were machined off to show a silver pin stripe effect.

Next step is to build the engine.  It will be a 903 block, bored to accept 1015 pistons.  The crank will be from the KZ1000.

Cheers.

...my greatest issue every year is finding the fung shway balance tween the left side and the right side of the only motorcycle I own. Even though it was born under a bad sign ( AMF slam here ) and forty years ago ( this year ), the accessory's available from catalogs that companies such as V-TWIN MFG among others seem endless and ever evolving, thus every year my tired ( and tyred ) old mule gets a facelift of sorts and I find myself fighting with the "balance" deal.    ...all subject to what I happened to have found during the previous season of riding or stumble across reading a catalog while teaching the toilet a lesson or in a thread here or something someone mentions at a coffee stop or while camping somewhere...

That "balance" thing is unnerving man...     ...it's like a curse or real bad foot odor..   ...it just follows a fella around like cheese or something..

...hopefully this season will find me closer to arriving at that happy place before I actually snap and insure the bike way before I had planned and hoped to.

...and maybe I will have a  "cheese" free year for a change..

   ...it could happen..

   ...and so it goes..

Sorry, I should have made myself clear.  I meant that of the Z1's, and KZ900/KZ1000's only the 1st year, 1973, the engines were black with silver edged fins.  In 74 the engines were unpainted.

Chris,

Just use paint stripper to remove old paint.  Works well.
