Title: Post Lockdown Crazy Drivers??
Post by: Steve G. on January 19, 2023, 11:10:24 AM

Not sure if 'you-all' outside of metro Van City have noticed, but there is clear evidence that car/truck/semi truck operators are frickin' losing their minds in early 2023. I don't drive or ride a bike like an old dude [not yet anyways] but there is clearly a sharp rise in mega crashes going on, insane drivers booking it down the highway at 150+ in their hyundai tuscons, full of kids, swerving in and out of traffic cutting everybody off on city streets only to be 8' ahead at the next light. Heck, yesterday on hwy 1, it would have been faster for me to drive home by crossing the Sumas border crossing and drive to Blaine WA and cross back into Canada. Mega crashes, torched and flipped cars and semis, not simple bumper hits. Mega crashes in the interior, Coquihalla shut down multiple times, there is something going on. I had a chat with an Abby police traffic guy at work recently. He'd stopped by to look at his daughter's car that had been "hit-and-run" while parked by a guy flying in meth, and I asked him if he'd noticed a change in driving habits that I had noticed. He said BIG TIME. All the cops are calling it 'post covid crazy'. Vehicle confiscations for no insurance, no drivers license, excessive speed and DWI are at an all time high to the point that tow yards have run out of room.
I think society is slowly losing the plot. I don't think it's time that i move to some cabin 60 kms from the nearest paved road, in fact i never would, but its getting tiring interacting with people that were barely capable of feeding themselves before the lockdown, and have truly lost it.
  Just be careful out there.

One of the reasons we moved from Squamish was to get away from the heavy traffic.  I was tired of braking when the driver in the next lane suddenly moves into my lane and then signals.  I had one accident in my truck on West Georgia where a driver failed to lane check and ran right into me in an adjacent lane.  I can understand maybe not lane checking on the Coke, but not in downtown Vancouver traffic.

The vehicle that drove by today seemed fine...

60k down a dirt road isn't so bad.

  Not for me thanks.

My 70 year old cousin lived with her husband way up behind Canim Lake for 20 years with their horses and dogs. He died. Couldn't get to health services in time. She couldn't manage things after that. Out in the bush, wood heat, spotty electricity services. She's since moved to Merritt, just before the floods. She's got health issues. Merritt's emergency ward is spotty, and no doctors there to take patients. You simply must take regular awareness check on your situation, to see if the atmosphere is conducive.
Bush life far away from everyone would never work for me.
I hear the Canadian govt is looking for remote lighthouse attendants. Good money. Everything included. No humans. Might work for some.

If they can fly drones remotely you'd think they could figure out how to run a lighthouse remotely.

Shawn, just a guess, but was that car a 64 Mercury Marauder in pristine condition?   ;D

I love a Marauder but I don't get the reference.

I owned one years ago but that's another story.  What I was trying to say is that in Saskatchewan older cars are still steady rides.  I have a cousin near Kindersley who still drives his 48 Merc half ton regularly.  It's been in his family since new.
